Why now

The EU Accessibility Act is already in force

The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) became applicable across the EU on 28 June 2025. If you sell products or services online to customers in the EU, in sectors like e-commerce, banking, transport ticketing or telecoms, it likely applies to your website regardless of where your business is based.

2019

Adopted

The Act enters into force as EU law.

2022

Transposed

Member states write it into national law.

2025

Became applicable

Compliance deadline passed on 28 June 2025.

Now

Enforcement under way

National regulators can investigate and act.

01

Who it covers

Businesses selling into the EU in specific sectors, including:

  • E-commerce and online retail
  • Banking and consumer finance
  • Transport ticketing and booking
  • Telecoms and e-books

02

What's required

Websites and apps need to meet the EN 301 549 standard, which closely follows WCAG 2.1 Level AA: things like readable contrast, keyboard access, clear labels and screen-reader support.

03

What's at stake

Enforcement differs by member state and is still maturing, but regulators can investigate complaints. More immediately, an estimated 87 million people in the EU live with a disability, and an inaccessible site turns real customers away.
